Brijuni National Park – a day among islands, nature and history
Istra Holiday · 15.1.2025
On a trip to Brijuni, the experience of the sea continues long after your boat arrives. Open lawns, leafy trees and traces of different historical periods come together in a landscape that invites you to explore at a slower pace. You can fill your day with sightseeing or simply enjoy a walk away from the bustle of the roads.
The most important step is to choose the right visiting programme in advance. Guided tours, independent visits and special excursions do not follow the same schedule or include the same experiences. With a little preparation, Brijuni can become an enjoyable part of your Istrian holiday, without uncertainty about where to board or how much time to allow for the return journey.
Departing Fažana and choosing your ticket
Fažana is the main departure point for visits to Veliki Brijun. Allow some extra time to reach this seaside town so that you can find parking, collect the information you need and board without rushing. A walk along the waterfront or a morning coffee is a lovely way to begin, but do not let it make you miss the departure time on your ticket.
Before buying, compare what each programme includes: boat transport, a guide, a tour or the opportunity to explore independently. The national park offers a guided Veliki Brijun excursion and individual visits with the Brijuni Pocket Guide. Check availability and details for your chosen date.
Look for tickets, sailing times and visiting rules on the official Brijuni National Park website. This is especially useful outside the main season, when you should not base your plans on a previous visit.
Veliki Brijun: nature and traces of the past
What makes Veliki Brijun special is the meeting of natural scenery and cultural heritage. Small details often catch your attention during a visit: shade beside a path, a view towards neighbouring islets or a change in the colour of the sea. Leave room for these moments rather than turning the trip into a checklist of photo stops.
A guided programme follows a set itinerary, while an independent visit requires more of your own planning. If you are travelling with children, choose a few things that will interest them and take breaks in between. Ask about distances and ways of getting around at the start, so that returning to the boat does not become a race against time.
At historic sites and exhibitions, it is worth reading a short explanation or listening to a guide. The landscape gains another layer of meaning, and something you might otherwise walk past becomes part of a story you can understand.
What to bring and how to organise your day
Comfortable shoes matter more than dressing up for the outing. Bring water, sun protection and clothing suited to the forecast, including an extra layer for the boat journey. In summer, make use of the shade and plan your walking so that there is enough time to rest between visits.
Before arriving, check the rules for pets, bicycles and anything else you would like to bring. Do not assume that a national park has the same conditions as an ordinary town promenade or excursion boat. If anyone in your group has difficulty getting around, check in advance whether your chosen programme is suitable.
Respect the marked paths and follow the park staff’s instructions. Observe animals quietly without feeding them, and put anything you bring with you in the designated disposal points. This helps keep the visit enjoyable both for you and for the place you have come to discover.
Making Brijuni part of your Istrian holiday
A Brijuni outing does not have to fill every hour of the day. After returning to Fažana, leave time for a meal and a short walk instead of adding several distant sights. If you would like to combine towns and nature during your holiday, spend one day on the island and explore the coast at your own pace on another.
For more ideas, read our guide to the Istrian peninsula or discover the beaches of Istria. Spread different outings across several days so that you also have time to relax at your accommodation.
When choosing accommodation in Istria, think about your main destinations and how you plan to travel. It is easier to enjoy the outing at a relaxed pace when you know in advance how long it takes to reach the departure point and get back.
