A holiday with your pet in Istria – travelling at a shared pace
Istra Holiday · 15.1.2025
For many people, a holiday feels complete only when their four-legged family member comes too. Istria offers many reasons to spend time outdoors together: seaside walks, green paths and quieter evenings at your accommodation. With good preparation, your pet need not be an obstacle to outings, but a reason to discover the region more slowly.
However, a pet-friendly label does not mean that the same rules apply everywhere. Check the property’s conditions, beach access and how you will organise your days. A few arrangements before arrival will make the stay easier for you, your host and your pet.
Choose accommodation that suits your pet
When booking, give the type, number and size of your pets and check whether your chosen property accepts them. Ask about extra charges, the areas where pets are permitted and any special rules for furniture, the pool or leaving an animal alone. It is easier to clarify these points before arriving than during your holiday.
A garden can be a great advantage, but check whether an enclosed property meets your dog’s needs. Fence height, gaps and the location of entrances can all matter. If the accommodation is in a shared building or near other guests, consider how your pet behaves in unfamiliar surroundings and around other animals.
Bring a familiar mat, bowls and things associated with its everyday routine. Browse our accommodation in Istria using the pet-friendly filter, and check the final conditions on each property’s page.
Dog-friendly beaches and a first encounter with the sea
For swimming, look for specifically marked beaches or sections where dogs are allowed. Rules vary between locations, so do not assume that pets are permitted in every quiet cove. Follow signs on site and ask the local tourist board for information.
The official tourism portal provides an overview of dog-friendly beaches in Istria. A listed location can be a starting point for your plans, but check access and current conditions for your stay. Bring drinking water, provide shade and choose an entry into the sea that suits your dog.
Not every pet enjoys swimming. Let yours get to know the place at its own pace, and organise the day around the heat and its habits. If it is not comfortable on the beach, a shorter walk at a suitable time of day may be a better choice.
Walks, outings and consideration for others
It is often easiest to plan walks together early in the morning and in the evening, when the weather and temperature are suitable. Choose routes with enough opportunities to rest and check the surface. Town streets, woodland paths and the coast call for different paces, particularly if your dog is older or unused to longer outings.
In towns, shared spaces and the countryside, follow the local rules for keeping dogs under control. Respect other visitors, domestic animals and wildlife, and always clean up after your pet. Before entering a restaurant, excursion boat or attraction, ask whether animals are accepted and under what conditions.
For destination ideas, see our guides to Poreč and eastern Istria. Choose the parts that are suitable for your pet too, rather than trying to follow an entire sightseeing plan without adapting it.
Preparing for the journey and settling into your accommodation
Before setting off, check the documents and travel conditions required for your animal and the country you are travelling from. Discuss any questions about health, protection or coping with the journey with your vet. Pack your pet’s usual food, the supplies it needs and a veterinary contact in case you need advice during your stay.
Plan suitable breaks on the journey, and allow time after arrival to explore the new surroundings. Do not immediately arrange a long outing. Check where the entrances and exits are, where your pet will sleep and where you can take the nearest walk. A familiar routine often matters more than a large number of new activities.
For a relaxed holiday, choose what suits your whole group. Compare our holiday homes and apartments according to space, rules and location. Your favourite memory may be something very simple: a walk together and a quiet evening after a day outdoors.
