Rovinj – a walk through a town that always returns to the sea
Istra Holiday · 15.1.2025
Rovinj stays in your memory through its bell tower above stone roofs, houses beside the sea and streets that keep inviting you to take another turn. There is no need to rush around the old town. The loveliest impressions often come between the famous sights: a morning view of the harbour, a pause outside a gallery or an evening walk along the waterfront.
The town is a good choice for a day trip or a longer holiday. Spend part of the day among the old town’s houses and another part in the greenery along the shore, leaving the evening for a meal and a sea view. This way, you will discover more than the familiar postcard scene.
From the waterfront to St Euphemia’s Church
You can begin your walk on the waterfront and continue towards the old town through Balbi’s Arch. Grisia Street and smaller passages lead to St Euphemia’s Church, the town’s dominant landmark. Pause beside stone façades, small shops and openings towards the sea. It is in details like these that Rovinj’s character comes through.
The climb is not a long list of sights to tick off, but a chance to notice how the town changes from the lively waterfront to quieter lanes. Choose comfortable footwear for stone surfaces and steps. If you are travelling with a pushchair or someone who finds climbs difficult, think ahead about your route and places to take a break.
At the top, allow time to look across the roofs and out to sea. Check current opening hours and religious services before entering the church or visiting the bell tower, then continue your walk down a different street to discover another corner of town.
The batana and a town shaped by the sea
The waterfront is a pleasant place to observe everyday life: small boats, passers-by and meetings that have nothing to do with a tourist schedule. From here, it is easier to understand how closely Rovinj is connected to the sea. Instead of taking a quick photograph, sit down for a short break and watch the scene change through the day.
Part of this story is the batana, a traditional wooden boat with a flat bottom. The Batana House Ecomuseum connects the boat with local customs and the lives of the town’s residents. Find information about batana-related activities on Rovinj’s official tourism website.
If you would like to join a boat ride or another organised programme, check dates and booking arrangements for your stay. This can be a lovely addition to your walk, but leave an evening free when you do not need a schedule at all.
The Golden Cape: a green escape beside the coast
After the stone streets, change your surroundings in the Zlatni rt forest park, also known as Punta Corrente. Paths, trees and views of the coves offer a quieter continuation of the day. You do not need a particular goal here: a short walk and a rest in the shade can be quite enough for a lovely outing.
In summer, combine time in the greenery with a swim along a stretch of shore that suits you. Check the surface and the easiest place to enter the sea. Bring water, respect the route signs and share the space considerately with other walkers and cyclists.
To plan your time by the sea, read our guide to Istrian beaches. Do not turn the whole day into sightseeing: Rovinj is especially enjoyable when you can linger in a place you like.
When to visit and how to arrange your outings
On summer days, plan sightseeing and swimming around the temperature and crowds. Mornings and early evenings are often more comfortable for walking, while spring and autumn offer different opportunities for walks and outings. If you are visiting for one day, check parking and choose a few activities rather than trying to see everything.
For a longer stay, add an outing towards Vrsar and Funtana or the countryside. Alternate town walks with days that do not involve longer drives. Leave time for Istrian flavours, a market visit or a leisurely lunch that lasts a little longer.
When choosing accommodation in Istria, check the location, parking and access to your planned outings. What matters is finding a base that makes your holiday easier, rather than simply a location that looks good on a map.
